Braves 6, Phillies 2: Kerr's scoreless 3 1/3 innings carry Atlanta past Philadelphia in Wild Card clincher, October 2

Ray Kerr, a 32-year-old reliever who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2024 and worked at a 7-Eleven five years ago, earned the win Thursday as the Braves defeated the Phillies 6-2 in Game 3 of the NL Wild Card Series to advance to the NLDS.

The Braves defeated the Phillies 6-2 on Thursday, October 2, in Game 3 of the National League Wild Card Series, advancing to the NLDS with a performance built on an unlikely hero: 32-year-old reliever Ray Kerr, who allowed one hit over 3 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win. Kerr learned Wednesday night that he would serve as the opener in the winner-take-all game. Six weeks prior, he was at Triple-A Gwinnett, still making his way back from Tommy John surgery he underwent in 2024. In 2015, Kerr pitched for the Reno Astros, a men's league team with many collegiate players, while working at a 7-Eleven and a movie theater simultaneously. He grew up in foster homes while his father served prison time. Kerr's assignment was to neutralize the Phillies' two left-handed sluggers, Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper, at the top of the order. Kerr has made just 48 career Major League appearances, with nine coming this season. He carries a 1.47 ERA in those nine big league games. He auditioned as an opener by throwing three scoreless innings on Friday in Miami, and had held the Phillies scoreless over two outings (6 1/3 innings) in September, per MLB.com's reporting. Kerr said after the game, "This was just another Thursday. Growing up, I had a hard time. So, this was nothing." Grant Holmes, Robert Suarez, Didier Fuentes, and Dylan Dodd bridged the game until Chris Sale appeared out of the bullpen. The 37-year-old Sale struck out Harper to end the eighth, recording the final four outs after throwing 95 pitches over 6 1/3 innings a little more than 48 hours earlier. Sale said of Kerr: "To do what he did tonight for us, that's unbelievable. He did everything he could for this ballclub. He put it on the line for us tonight. That fired me up, honestly, and I think it got everyone going." Atlanta's offense produced three home runs: Matt Olson, Ozzie Albies, and Michael Harris II all connected. All three were part of Braves teams eliminated by Philadelphia in both the 2022 and 2023 NL Division Series, per MLB.com's reporting. Manager Walt Weiss said of Kerr: "Hopefully Ray Kerr became a bit of a household name tonight. He deserves it. He's got an amazing story of perseverance. That was a best-case scenario, and he did it. He got through the top twice, which kept us from using another guy at the top. So, Ray, it all started with Ray. Everything fell into place because of Ray Kerr." Kerr said: "I've dreamed about stuff like this. For it to actually happen, I still haven't even processed yet." The Braves had lost six straight winner-take-all postseason games, the third-longest streak of all time. Their last such victory was Game 7 of the 1996 NL Championship Series. Atlanta will face the two-time defending World Series champion Dodgers in the NLDS, with that series opening at Dodger Stadium on Saturday, October 5, per MLB.com.

The Evening Brief 7:53 PM ET

The Cleveland Browns host Pittsburgh on Thursday Night Football with both teams at 2-1 and first place in the AFC North on the line. The game airs on Prime Video at 8:15 p.m. ET from Huntington Bank Field, and the offensive matchups tell the story: Pittsburgh's rushing game has accelerated over three weeks (58 yards in Week 1, 91 in Week 2, 138 in Week 3) and now averages 4.3 yards per carry, while Cleveland allows 4.5 yards per rush and ranks 29th in rushing offense at 3.5 yards per carry. The Steelers forced two turnovers in each of their last two games. Deshaun Watson has completed 68.2% of passes with five touchdowns and one interception and led game-winning fourth-quarter drives in each of the Browns' last two victories, but Cleveland's offense ranks 22nd overall at 266.3 yards per game and was held to just 127 yards in Week 3. The Steelers traded cornerback Joey Porter Jr. to Dallas on Wednesday for a 2027 sixth-round pick and 2028 second-round pick. Jalen Ramsey is listed as questionable with a wrist injury.

College football's audience problem deepened Friday: FBS broadcasts averaged 1.7 million viewers through the first four weeks of 2026, down 11% from the same span in 2025. Only two games have topped 10 million viewers this season versus 11 last year at this point. Texas's 24-23 comeback win over Ohio State in Week 2 drew 14 million on ABC, marking the most-watched regular-season ESPN platform matchup in a decade. The broader decline puts pressure on the CFP-ESPN negotiation: the two sides have until October 9 to agree on media rights for the 24-team playoff expansion, with the core dispute centering on how to value the new bracket against the $250 million in aggregate revenue that current conference championship games generate. If the deadline passes without a deal, CFP rights move to open market where Fox, NBC, and Prime Video can bid. Meanwhile, the WTA announced all combined 1000 tournaments will match men's and women's prize money starting in 2027, bringing the Italian Open, Canadian Open, and Cincinnati Open into full parity with existing venues.

In baseball, the Braves advanced past Philadelphia in a Wild Card clincher powered by an unlikely hero: 32-year-old reliever Ray Kerr threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings Thursday as Atlanta defeated the Phillies 6-2 in Game 3. Kerr was at Triple-A Gwinnett six weeks ago recovering from Tommy John surgery and learned Wednesday he would start the elimination game. Matt Olson, Ozzie Albies, and Michael Harris II all homered. Chris Sale, the 37-year-old starter from 48 hours prior, struck out Bryce Harper to end the eighth. Atlanta ended a six-game elimination-game losing streak and advances to the NLDS against the two-time defending World Series champion Dodgers, with that series opening at Dodger Stadium on Saturday, October 5. In basketball, Jalen Duren agreed to a five-year, $200 million extension with Detroit Thursday night, ending monthslong restricted free agency talks. The 22-year-old accepted less than his max eligibility after contentious negotiations. In college basketball, a Kentucky Court of Appeals dissolved a temporary injunction Friday that had allowed fifth-year eligibility for players including Missouri's Mark Mitchell, Louisville's Seth Trimble, and LSU's Skyy Clark. The ruling leaves their eligibility status uncertain pending further court proceedings, with affected players expected to file individual lawsuits in their states of residence before the November season start.

In women's sports, Manchester City drew 1-1 with Real Madrid in the Women's Champions League on October 1, with Khadija Shaw scoring City's second-half equalizer after Linda Caicedo gave Madrid the lead. Both teams sit at two points through two fixtures. The WNBA cleared A'ja Wilson for Game 3 of the Fever-Aces series after determining she remained in the player escape lane rather than the spectator stands during her Game 2 confrontation with a courtside fan. Game 3 is scheduled for October 1 at 9 p.m. ET at Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas on USA Network and CNBC. The Fever won Game 2 to extend the series after losing Game 1. The Diamondbacks extended manager Torey Lovullo with a two-year contract Thursday, keeping him for an 11th season after Arizona finished 86-76 and narrowly missed the postseason. In New Orleans, Saints running back Travis Etienne Jr. was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury sustained in Week 3, with coach Kellen Moore estimating at least four weeks of recovery. Etienne, signed to a four-year deal worth $47-52 million, had 30 carries for 128 yards through three games. Alvin Kamara and Kendre Miller will carry the bulk of the load.
