College football viewership down 11% through September vs. 2025
FBS game broadcasts averaged 1.7 million viewers through the first four weeks of the 2026 season, down 11% from the same period in 2025, according to Front Office Sports. Only two games topped 10 million viewers this season versus 11 last year at this point. College GameDay, however, is averaging 2.83 million viewers, up 5% from 2025's season average.
FBS game broadcasts are averaging 1.7 million viewers through the first four weeks of the 2026 season, down 11% compared to the same span in 2025, according to Front Office Sports. The decline reflects a sharper contraction in marquee matchups: only two games have exceeded 10 million viewers so far this year, compared to 11 at this point last season.
Texas's 24-23 comeback victory over Ohio State in Week 2 drew 14 million viewers on ABC, making it the most-watched regular-season matchup on an ESPN platform in a decade, per Front Office Sports. Ole Miss's 32-24 win over LSU on September 19 was the only other game to top 10 million viewers. That stands in stark contrast to the 2025 opening weekend, when four games surpassed the 10 million threshold, led by a Texas-Ohio State matchup on Fox that drew 16.6 million viewers.
Other broadcasts have struggled to draw sizable audiences. LSU's 51-10 blowout victory over Clemson drew 5.8 million viewers and came after a two-hour rain delay at kickoff, per Front Office Sports.
College GameDay, the sport's primary pre-game program, is performing above last season's baseline. According to Front Office Sports, ESPN's College GameDay is averaging 2.83 million viewers through the first four weeks, a 5% increase from the 2025 season average of 2.7 million viewers. Weeks 2 through 4 each set the most-watched episode for that respective week in program history.
The SEC and Big Ten will enter the heart of their conference schedules primarily on ABC and Fox, respectively, in the coming weeks and months. NBC is scheduled to air a matchup between No. 3 Miami and No. 4 Notre Dame on November 7; the same teams drew 10.8 million viewers on ABC last year when that game aired in Week 1, per Front Office Sports. How viewership tracks through the remainder of the season will depend partly on the strength of those upcoming matchups and network placement.
FBS viewership is down 11% to 1.7 million average viewers through Week 4 of the 2026 season compared to the same four weeks in 2025.
The November 7 Miami-Notre Dame broadcast and the intensification of conference play on major networks in October and November will test whether September's 11% decline represents a seasonal low point or a sign of sustained audience softening. If premium matchups continue to draw below 10 million viewers through the fall, the trend will force networks and conferences to reassess promotional strategy and scheduling assumptions heading into 2027.
