WNBA clears A'ja Wilson for Game 3 after determining fan incident occurred outside stands, October 1
The WNBA announced it would not issue further punishment to four-time MVP A'ja Wilson beyond the technical foul she received during Game 2 of the Fever-Aces series. The league determined Wilson remained in the player escape lane rather than the spectator stands during her confrontation with a courtside fan, clearing her to play in Game 3 on October 1, 2026.
The WNBA announced it would not issue further punishment to A'ja Wilson beyond the technical foul she received during Game 2 of the Indiana Fever-Las Vegas Aces playoff series. The league's determination centered on a precise reading of where Wilson was positioned during her confrontation with a courtside fan. During Game 2 on September 29, Wilson had an altercation with a fan seated in the second row behind the basket after being fouled by Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. According to Front Office Sports reporting, the fan appeared to point at Wilson after the foul. Wilson approached the fan and said something before being restrained by her teammates. Crew chief Randy Richardson issued a technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct with the Fever ahead 90-79 with four minutes left in the fourth quarter. Wilson was not ejected. The technical foul raised the question of whether Wilson's conduct triggered the WNBA rulebook's explicit suspension provision. Section II. J. of the WNBA rulebook states: "Any coach, player, or trainer who deliberately enters the spectator stands during the game will be automatically ejected and the incident reported via e-mail to the Commissioner." The escape lane is the designated area between the court and the spectator seating where players are permitted to operate without penalty for proximity to fans. The fan was temporarily removed from his seat following the incident. Arena security determined the fan did not violate the Fan Code of Conduct. The fan was allowed to return. After the game, Wilson said, per Front Office Sports: "If I am just walking, just got the foul, I'm chilling and I see a man come at me, taking steps toward me and pointing at me, I don't give a damn what you said. I don't give a damn how you said it, the tone. That is unacceptable. You don't step toward me. You never should sit and point at me. That there is unacceptable." The Fever won Game 2, 99-98, to extend the series to a deciding third game. In Game 1 on September 27, the Aces defeated the Fever 102-85. Game 3 is scheduled for October 1 at 9 p.m. ET at Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, simulcast live on USA Network and CNBC. In Game 2, Caitlin Clark posted the first-ever 25-point, 15-assist game in league history. The winner of Game 3 advances to the semifinals to face either the Golden State Valkyries or Dallas Wings.
The WNBA determined A'ja Wilson remained in the player escape lane during her Game 2 fan confrontation and would face no suspension beyond her technical foul, clearing her for the do-or-die Game 3.
The league's interpretation of the escape lane versus the stands becomes operative precedent for future player-fan boundary incidents. Game 3 tips off October 1 at 9 p.m. ET with Wilson available; if the Aces win, Wilson's clearance is moot; if the Fever win, the series moves to Game 4 and the significance of her availability diminishes as a one-game variable.
