Giants release WR Odell Beckham Jr. After three-game stint

The New York Giants released wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. after he played 20 offensive snaps and recorded zero catches in three games. Head coach John Harbaugh said the team could not find a way to make the fit work.

The New York Giants released wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. after a brief stint that yielded no offensive production. Beckham played a total of 20 offensive snaps across three games and recorded zero catches, per CBS Sports. The Giants defeated the Tennessee Titans 12-7 on Sunday in Beckham's most recent appearance, where he saw six offensive snaps and one target. During that game, MetLife Stadium erupted in chants of Beckham's initials, a reminder of the fan enthusiasm for his return. Head coach John Harbaugh addressed the release, saying per CBS Sports: "I had a great conversation with Odell, and it's tough. But we just weren't getting enough, you know? It just wasn't working for us." Harbaugh framed the decision as a roster need rather than a reflection on Beckham: "Roster spot-wise, we need more out of that spot and that's what we're gonna do. Nothing about Odell. Nothing that he could do, in that sense. It's just we weren't able to get it done, make it fit, make it work, whatever you want to call it." Beckham found himself low on the depth chart behind Malik Nabers, Darnell Mooney, and Malachi Fields. Following his release, the Giants signed wide receiver and punt returner Braxton Berrios to the active roster, as well as Charlie Jones, per the reporting. The move addressed the team's need to place Berrios on the active roster after he exhausted his practice-squad elevations. Beckham, who turns 34 in November, was drafted by New York with the 12th overall pick in 2014 and ranks second in Giants franchise history in receiving yards with 5,476 and fourth in receiving touchdowns with 44. After five seasons with the Giants, he was traded to the Cleveland Browns. He recorded his fifth 1,000-yard season in 2019 before tearing his ACL in 2020. Released by Cleveland, he joined the Los Angeles Rams in 2021, won a Super Bowl that year, but re-tore his ACL in the final game. He sat out 2022, spent one year with the Baltimore Ravens and one with the Miami Dolphins, took a season off in 2025, and had hoped to rewrite his story with a return to New York. In August, after making the Giants' final 53-man roster, Beckham stated: "I have an opportunity to rewrite some of the last bit of the chapter. Don't know, last year, whatever it is, I just know I'm going to give my all." According to Jordan Schultz, Beckham will not be returning to the Giants' practice squad and is looking for an opportunity to play immediately.

The key fact

Beckham, who ranks second in Giants franchise history in receiving yards with 5,476 and fourth in receiving touchdowns with 44, recorded zero catches in his return to the team that drafted him in 2014.

The Bottom Line

Beckham will seek employment elsewhere as a free agent at 34; the Giants' inability to integrate him into the offense despite his return to the franchise where he built much of his Hall of Fame case suggests that opportunity windows for aging receivers, even prominent ones, close quickly.
