Morgan Tuck remains GM as Connecticut Sun relocate to Houston to become Comets in 2027

Morgan Tuck will relocate with the Connecticut Sun and remain general manager when the franchise becomes the Houston Comets for the 2027 season, the team announced on September 16. Tuck told CT Insider she is "very excited about the future."

Tuck won four NCAA championships at UConn and a 2020 WNBA title with the Seattle Storm. Connecticut drafted her with the third overall pick in 2016. She played her first four WNBA seasons with the Sun before finishing her career with the 2020 Storm championship team. In 2021, Tuck returned to the Sun as director of franchise development, spent two years as assistant general manager, and was promoted to general manager in December 2024.

On May 14 at a press conference at Toyota Center in Houston, Rockets vice chairman Patrick Fertitta said the franchise hoped to retain several members of the Sun's front office, including Tuck and team president Jennifer Rizzotti. Fertitta stated: "Morgan Tuck, who has been there for a few years, has a WNBA championship in her own right and has done a fantastic job helping build that team and running the team on the basketball side." Sun president Jennifer Rizzotti told The Associated Press: "Morgan started last offseason with the rebuild after our old roster turned over. She will now have clarity and strategic decisions regardless where it is if we remained in Connecticut or moving."

The relocation follows the WNBA and NBA Board of Governors' unanimous approval on May 13 of the sale of the Sun from the Mohegan Tribe to Fertitta for $300 million, a record for a WNBA team. The agreement was first announced on March 30. A competing bid led by former Boston Celtics minority owner Stephen Pagliuca, which offered $325 million to move the franchise to Boston, was not selected. The WNBA said relocation decisions belonged to the Board of Governors and not to individual teams.

Tuck's first offseason as general manager followed the departure of coach Stephanie White and the entire 2024 starting lineup. Connecticut hired coach Rachid Meziane one day after promoting Tuck to GM in December 2024. The club went 11-33 in 2025 and was eliminated from playoff contention again in August, its second straight season out of the postseason under Meziane.

Kevin Pelton, a longtime ESPN analyst and former statistical consultant for the Indiana Pacers, joined Houston as assistant general manager and vice president of analytics. Pelton has worked with Tuck and Rizzotti through the Sun's final season in Connecticut. Rizzotti said strategic decisions for the 2026 season fell to her on the business side and to Tuck on the basketball side, with Houston looped in only to a certain extent until the sale became official.

Houston business executives met with Sun staff on May 18 to begin discussions about which employees would relocate. Gretchen Sheirr, the club's president of business operations, said the Comets will have a dedicated operations structure while some Rockets employees move to the WNBA side.

The Comets will play home games at Toyota Center beginning in 2027. The original Houston Comets won the WNBA's first four championships, from 1997 through 2000. The Comets played their last game on September 15, 2008, and suspended operations months later. Cynthia Cooper welcomed the franchise's return after the sale was announced.

The Mohegan Tribe bought the franchise for roughly $10 million and moved it from Orlando to Uncasville in 2003. Connecticut closes its regular season on September 24 at home against the Toronto Tempo.
