Scheffler dominates FedEx St. Jude Championship with eight-shot victory

Scottie Scheffler closed with a 4-under 66 on Sunday to win the FedEx St. Jude Championship by eight shots, the largest margin of victory in the tournament's 68-year history at TPC Southwind, according to ESPN. Scheffler finished at 17-under 263, with Si Woo Kim in second place also at 9-under after a closing 68. Sam Burns and Alex Noren tied for third, while Sungjae Im tied for fifth.

The victory comes as the opening event of the PGA Tour's postseason, and it delivers Scheffler both immediate cash and longer-term leverage. Per ESPN's reporting, Scheffler won $3.6 million from the event's prize fund and clinched an additional $23 million in bonus money for holding the No. 1 position in the FedEx Cup standings through next week's BMW Championship.

Scheffler's performance in the final round was marked by both adversity and recovery. On the par-5 third hole, his bunker shot landed on a sprinkler head, took a hard hop and rolled through the green into the water for a bogey. According to ESPN, after that shot his lead was shrunk to one shot over Sungjae Im. Scheffler then made consecutive birdie putts on the fifth and sixth holes to rebuild control, and he matched the best score of the day while playing in the final group under stifling heat and the most wind of the week, per ESPN.

The tournament also held significance in Scheffler's season arc. Per ESPN, this was his first victory in nearly seven months, following his season-opening win at The American Express in the California desert. TPC Southwind had been the course Scheffler had played the most times without winning, and the FedEx Cup playoffs opener had been the only postseason tournament he had yet to win. According to ESPN, Scheffler now holds 21 career PGA Tour victories, with 10 of them by four shots or more.

Scheffler's season record now stands at two victories, five runner-up finishes and five other top-4 finishes, per ESPN. The margin of victory exceeded the previous tournament record of seven shots, set by John Cook in 1996. Sam Burns posted a double bogey on the third hole in his own round. Sungjae Im's tie for fifth moved him from No. 53 into the top 50 who advance to the BMW Championship next week in St. Louis, securing him a spot in the $20 million signature events next year, according to ESPN.

Scheffler described frustration during the round after his bunker misfortune, telling reporters, "Man, when is this going to stop happening?" This statement suggests he had faced multiple instances of unlucky breaks earlier in the season despite strong overall play.
