Dolphins RB Achane out for season after torn ACL in Week 3 loss to Chiefs

Miami Dolphins running back De'Von Achane suffered a torn ACL in the Week 3 loss to Kansas City and will miss the rest of the 2026 season. The injury occurred in the first quarter on a non-contact run when Achane planted his left leg to cut right and the leg gave out. Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley said postgame the outlook "does not sound very optimistic," and the team will lean on backup Ollie Gordon II going forward.

Miami Dolphins running back De'Von Achane suffered a torn ACL in the Week 3 loss to Kansas City and will miss the rest of the 2026 season. The injury occurred in the first quarter on a non-contact run when Achane planted his left leg to cut right and the leg gave out beneath him, per CBS Sports' reporting.

Achane departed after less than five minutes of action and was initially deemed questionable to return before the Dolphins downgraded him to out. He was able to walk under his own power both to the sideline and to the locker room and appeared to be in good spirits when he returned to the sideline in his uniform, according to CBS sideline reporter Melanie Collins. Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley said postgame: "To be very honest with you, it does not sound very optimistic at this moment, but I can't give you any other details until I have them."

Achane finished the game with 3 carries for 17 yards and ended the season with 34 carries, 117 yards, 7 receptions, 49 receiving yards, and zero touchdowns through three weeks. The Dolphins lost to Kansas City 24-10 without him.

Ollie Gordon II, a third-year running back from Oklahoma State, stepped into the lead role. Gordon scored the team's first touchdown of the day with a three-yard run in the first quarter but reported cramps and was deemed questionable to return in the second half. Gordon was the only other active running back on Miami's Week 2 roster and projects as the top ballcarrier moving forward. He had only three touches over the first two weeks but carried the ball 20 times against the Chiefs. Gordon has 90 career carries in the NFL.

The Dolphins finished with 119 total rushing yards in the Week 3 loss, led by quarterback Malik Willis with 56 yards on nine carries. Without Achane's explosiveness in the backfield, Miami's offensive attack shifts to a heavier reliance on short-yardage runs and pass-game sequencing.

The key fact

De'Von Achane, an elite young RB, tore his ACL in the first quarter of Miami's Week 3 loss to Kansas City and is out for the season.

The Bottom Line

Gordon II assumes full-time RB duties with 90 career carries on his resume and a modest statistical foundation. The Dolphins' ground-game production over the next three weeks will signal whether Gordon can sustain offensive rhythm or whether the absence of Achane opens a measurable gap in their rushing attack.
