The NFL suspended San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York for six games and fined him $500,000 on Friday for violating the league's personal conduct policy, according to The Guardian. The suspension and fine stem from York's August arrest in a prostitution sting in Ohio.
York has not attended any games or league meetings so far this season and was credited with three games served, per The Guardian. He is eligible to return on October 20, the day after the 49ers' October 19 game against Washington, which coincides with the start of the NFL's fall league meetings in New York.
The criminal case underlying the suspension concluded in Ohio. In August, York was arrested in a mobile home park by the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force. Police said he was attempting to pay $160 for sex with a woman he believed to be a prostitute. York was booked into jail and released after posting a $5,000 bond.
York was initially charged with engaging in prostitution, but prosecutors amended that to disorderly conduct, according to The Guardian. He pleaded no contest to disorderly conduct and to possessing criminal tools for using his phone to respond to an undercover online prostitution advertisement. York was sentenced to one day in jail for both offenses to be served concurrently and was credited with one day served when he pleaded no contest. He was fined $1,150 in the criminal case. Police seized the $160 from York, and that money was later given to the human trafficking task force as part of the plea. York completed an online course as part of his sentence.
In a statement reported by The Guardian, York said he accepts the punishment and apologized for his actions: "To my family, to the players, coaches, and employees of the San Francisco 49ers, to our fans and partners, I am deeply sorry. This was an inexcusable mistake and I take full responsibility."
York holds ownership stakes in the Premier League's Leeds United and Scotland's Rangers through 49ers Enterprises.

York's six-game suspension allows his return to team facilities and league activities on October 20. The question of how his absence affects day-to-day 49ers operations during his required absence remains unaddressed by the league's ruling.
