Astros Mutually Part Ways With GM Dana Brown; Jim Crane Assumes Interim Baseball Operations Control

The Houston Astros have mutually agreed to part ways with general manager Dana Brown, with owner Jim Crane assuming interim lead of baseball operations and overseeing the franchise through a transition period, according to Front Office Sports. Brown's responsibilities are being distributed among assistant general managers Charles Cook, Gavin Dickey, and Connor Huff, as well as senior advisor and Baseball Hall of Famer Jeff Bagwell, per Front Office Sports. Brown's contract was set to expire at the end of the 2026 season. Crane, who acquired the franchise in 2011, performed a similar interim role during a nearly three-month transition period between James Click's firing in late 2022 and Brown's arrival in early 2023. During that earlier transition, the Astros made expensive and unproductive free-agent signings of Jose Abreu and Rafael Montero, according to Front Office Sports. The current roster includes Yordan Alvarez, described by Front Office Sports as a potential Triple Crown winner and near-lock for the AL Most Valuable Player award, as well as experienced stars Jose Altuve and Jeremy Pena. The Astros carry a top-10 Major League Baseball luxury-tax payroll, per Front Office Sports. Crane's history with the franchise includes the firing of James Click "just days after winning the 2022 World Series amid contract negotiation issues and wider philosophical differences," per Front Office Sports. Click had helped stabilize the Astros' front office following the club's prior sign-stealing scandal, which had involved former general manager Jeff Luhnow. The current front-office restructuring has drawn comparisons to the Dallas Cowboys' structure, in which owner Jerry Jones also serves as general manager, according to Front Office Sports.
