Andy Green named Mets' full-time manager on 3-year deal, September 22

The New York Mets named Andy Green their full-time manager on a three-year contract on September 22, removing his interim designation after he took over the club in late June. Green, 49, compiled a 37-38 record as interim manager and led the Mets to a 31-28 mark since the All-Star break, per MLB.com's reporting.

Green replaced Carlos Mendoza, whom the Mets fired on July 26 after the team started 34-47. The Mets went on to post a 24-19 record following the August 3 trade deadline that sent away several veterans, finishing the season 71-85 overall. The club is entering Tuesday night's game against the Rangers.

Green joined the Mets in 2023 as senior vice president of baseball development, per CBS Sports. He held previous managerial roles with the San Diego Padres from 2016 through 2019 and served as bench coach with the Chicago Cubs from 2020 through 2022. Green played parts of four seasons in the major leagues from 2004 through 2009 and appeared in four games with the Mets in his final season, per CBS Sports.

For months prior to the announcement, Green had stated he would return to his front office role after the season rather than pursue the permanent manager job, citing family as a priority, per CBS Sports. The reversal signals the organization's confidence in his leadership during the interim period.

Owners Alex and Steve Cohen stated in the announcement: "Andy has connected with and pushed our players to perform, despite the disappointment of the season. Over the last several months he has brought discipline, accountability and positivity to the clubhouse, attributes we were seeking in our next manager."

President of baseball operations David Stearns said: "Over the course of the season, it became evident that the next manager of the New York Mets was already in place. Andy has demonstrated strong leadership qualities and a unique ability to forge connections with our emerging core and distinguished veterans. I look forward to continuing our great partnership as we turn toward the 2027 season."

Green told reporters: "When I accepted the interim role, I didn't anticipate it becoming permanent, but the more time I spent with our players and staff, the clearer it became that this is where my passion and experience could make the greatest impact."
