Angels dismiss pitching coach Maddux, assistants Chiti, Scott mid-season

The Los Angeles Angels fired pitching coach Mike Maddux, assistant pitching coach Darryl Scott, and bullpen coach Dom Chiti on Tuesday, August 11, the team announced, according to ESPN's reporting. The move comes as the Angels sit at 45-74, the worst record in Major League Baseball, and face their 11th consecutive losing season.

The dismissals signal an attempt to salvage the pitching program with seven weeks remaining in the season. The Angels' pitching staff carries a 4.51 ERA, seventh-worst in the majors, and leads all of baseball in walks at 508 through Monday's games, per ESPN.

Interim general manager and baseball operations consultant John Mozeliak said the decision was made after discussing the coaching staff's direction with manager Kurt Suzuki. "After spending time discussing with Kurt where we are as a coaching staff and where we want to go in the future, we felt it was best to make a change," Mozeliak said, according to ESPN. "With seven weeks remaining, we plan to use this time to evaluate what additional steps are needed to elevate our entire pitching program and best position us for success moving forward."

Tim Leveque has been named interim pitching coach and Michael Wuertz will serve as interim bullpen coach. Leveque is in his first season as pitching coach at the Angels' Double-A Rocket City affiliate after working in the Cardinals organization during Mozeliak's tenure there, per ESPN. Wuertz's previous role in the Angels organization was not detailed in official team statements.

Maddux, who turns 65 on August 27, signed a one-year contract with the Angels in the offseason. The move is particularly notable given his recent success: his work with the Texas Rangers produced the best ERA in the majors in 2025, and he was part of the Rangers' 2023 championship run. Over his 24-year coaching career, Maddux has held pitching coach positions with the Milwaukee Brewers (2003-2008), Washington Nationals (2016-2017), St. Louis Cardinals (2018-2022), and Texas Rangers (2009-2015, then 2023-2025) before joining the Angels. He pitched 15 years in the major leagues.

Chiti was in his first season as bullpen coach after rejoining the Angels organization in late 2023. Scott was in his first season with the Angels after several years with the Colorado Rockies, per ESPN. The Angels also fired general manager Perry Minasian in late June as organizational changes have accelerated under Mozeliak's interim leadership.
