Vollering wins women's world road race title in Montreal with dramatic sprint finish

Demi Vollering, 29, won the women's road race world championship in Montreal on Saturday, September 26, in one of the longest editions of the race ever contested. The Dutch rider finished in four hours 45 minutes nine seconds, per BBC Sport.

The race circuit measured 13.4 kilometers and included eight laps around Montreal, with steep gradients on Voie Camillien-Houde. The course proved treacherous. Spanish rider Paula Blasi, the race favorite, abandoned after crashing for a second time. Defending champion Magdeleine Vallieres from Mauritius crashed while speeding downhill with 95 kilometers to race and abandoned with a little over 60 kilometers remaining. Great Britain's Flora Perkins crashed in the same descent, as did Tour of Britain winner Kim Le Court. A total of 15 riders crashed while speeding downhill on that section.

Vollering made her first significant attack with 40 kilometers of racing remaining on the steepest section of road. She was chased by a select group of eight that included Kasia Niewiadoma of Poland, Marlen Reusser, and Italian national champion Elisa Longo Borghini. Vollering was recaptured with less than 20 kilometers to go. The group fractured under pressure from Niewiadoma, the 2024 Tour de France winner, and Longo Borghini. Longo Borghini launched her own attack on the final lap and held off Reusser to claim third place, per Guardian Sport reporting.

With less than 200 meters to go, Vollering and Niewiadoma were side by side. Vollering's acceleration proved decisive. Niewiadoma crossed the line apparently suffering from cramp. Pfeiffer Georgi was the best British finisher, in 11th place.

Vollering's victory caps an unprecedented season. She won a second Tour de France Femmes title in 2026, according to Guardian Sport. She won the Giro d'Italia Donne, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and the Tour of Flanders. The world road race title completes a sweep of the sport's major monuments and stage races in a single calendar year, a feat rarely achieved in professional cycling.
