Stephen Curry signs 2-year, $116 million extension with Warriors

Stephen Curry agreed to a 2-year, $116 million contract extension with the Golden State Warriors, the team confirmed on Friday. The deal includes a player option for the 2028-29 season, per CBS Sports. Curry was only eligible to add two years to his existing contract due to the NBA's over-38 rule, which limits contract length for players above that age. With a projected $176 million salary cap for 2026-27, players with 10 or more years of experience are eligible for deals starting at 35 percent of the cap, which would pay $128 million over two years. An individual player's max salary is never less than 105 percent of his previous salary. Since Curry is the highest-paid player in the NBA at $62.6 million for 2026-27, he would have been eligible to start a new contract above the 35 percent max and ultimately earn close to $137 million in total over two years had he sought maximum compensation, according to CBS. He took more than $20 million below that maximum. Curry, 38, is entering his 18th NBA season, all with the Warriors. The extension brings his guaranteed career earnings to roughly $650 million, according to Spotrac data cited by CBS, which would make him the highest-paid player in league history. Curry's cap figure will be $55.7 million for the 2027-28 season. Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy said in a statement, per CBS: "We couldn't be more excited about reaching an agreement with Stephen and extending his historic career with the Warriors. Personally, I don't think there has ever been a better face to a franchise in professional sports history, both on and off the court, than Stephen Curry with the Warriors." In a recent ESPN interview, Curry said, "We're in a very interesting situation. All the different salary cap conditions of whether I sign for a max or less or whatever it is, I want to be on a competitive team. I want to have an opportunity to have some flexibility because we haven't had that in years past, the recent past." Before the extension, Golden State could have entered the 2027 offseason with over $100 million in cap space, per CBS. Kristaps Porzingis holds a $20 million player option with only $3 million guaranteed. Since winning their last championship in 2022, the Warriors have made the playoffs just twice in the last four years and have not returned to the Western Conference Finals, per CBS.
