Sources: Athletics' Shea Langeliers has torn meniscus

Shea Langeliers, the Athletics' All-Star catcher and primary run producer, suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee on the basepaths and faces a decision on surgery that will likely sideline him through the end of 2026, according to ESPN's reporting. The 28-year-old's injury effectively ends the trade speculation that had circulated around him before the Aug. 3 deadline, as multiple teams had hoped Oakland's resistance to moving him would soften.

Langeliers' loss removes the A's most consistent offensive threat. Over 93 games this season, he has hit .263/.332/.497 with 23 home runs and 51 RBIs, according to ESPN. Behind the plate, he caught 11 runners on 35 stolen-base attempts. Since taking over as the A's full-time catcher in 2023, only Cal Raleigh has hit more home runs than Langeliers' 105, per ESPN's data. He was on pace to become just the third catcher in major league history with three consecutive seasons of at least 29 home runs.

The injury compounds an already crippled roster. Slugger Brent Rooker underwent season-ending knee surgery, and both Nick Kurtz and Jacob Wilson have suffered injuries affecting the team. The A's enter late July with a record of 44-60, according to ESPN, and carry an MLB-worst minus-122 run differential. Their pitching staff carries a 5.37 ERA.

Langeliers was acquired from the Atlanta Braves in the Matt Olson trade in 2022 and was drafted from Baylor with the ninth pick in 2019. Backup catcher Jonah Heim, a former All-Star, has played well in Langeliers' absence this season and will take over full-time catching duties, per ESPN. Heim has also been viewed as a potential trade candidate.
