Sompo to sponsor new PGA Tour Championship Series event launching in 2028

Global insurance and financial services company Sompo has secured a multiyear sponsorship deal with the PGA Tour for a new Championship Series event, according to ESPN. The announcement marks Sompo as the first new sponsor to join the Championship Series tier as the tour continues restructuring post-merger.

The event will debut on the Championship Series in 2028, though its permanent home and date have not yet been announced. In 2027, Sompo will sponsor a transitional full-field event at Silverado Resort's North Course in Napa, California, from July 29 through August 1.

The Championship Series will consist of approximately 23 to 24 events annually, per ESPN, including the Players Championship, four major championships, PGA Tour playoff events, and either the Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup each season from February through August. The restructured tour will also feature a Challenger Series running concurrently, serving as the primary pathway to the top-tier Championship Series, with in-season elevation available to golfers with two victories.

PGA Tour chief commercial officer Dhruv Prasad stated, per ESPN: "Just a few weeks after we announced our new competitive model, we are delighted to welcome Sompo as the first new sponsor supporting the PGA Tour Championship Series that will launch in 2028." Prasad added the tour looks forward to "debuting this partnership in Napa in 2027 and are excited to announce its future home in a new market for the PGA Tour in the coming months."

The Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, will be part of the Championship Series starting in 2028, per ESPN's reporting.
