The path to their partnership was shaped by circumstance. Joe Salisbury, Skupski's former partner, later took a break from tennis because of anxiety, which led to Skupski pairing with Harrison, according to BBC Sport.

The match itself turned on a single break. Skupski and Harrison secured what BBC Sport describes as the first and only break of the match in the first set, with Harrison slamming a backhand winner down the line to lead 4-3. The second set required more drama. In the tie-break, Puetz and Krawietz were given a set point when a return clipped the net and wrong-footed Harrison. Skupski, speaking after the victory, said per BBC Sport: "I don't know what to say really, I'm still in shock. The speech gets a little bit easier once you've won. Losing twice and having championship points in the final last year was a tough part of my career, but it's amazing what a year does in tennis."

The US Open victory is Skupski's third men's doubles Grand Slam title. He won Wimbledon in 2023 with Wesley Koolhof, per BBC Sport.
