Saints' Tyson faces two-month absence with right hamstring injury from joint practice

New Orleans Saints rookie wide receiver Jordyn Tyson suffered a right hamstring injury during a joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday and could miss approximately two months, sources told Ian Rapoport and Mike Garofolo of NFL Network on Monday.

Tyson was hurt when he caught a pass and landed awkwardly. He tested his leg after the initial contact, then jogged off the field with athletic trainers and did not return to practice, according to ESPN's reporting.

A two-month absence from Thursday would place Tyson's return timeline around Week 6, leading up to New Orleans' game at the New York Giants. The Saints open the season at Detroit on Sept. 13. Following the Giants game, the Saints travel to Paris for a week, per ESPN.

Saints coach Kellen Moore declined to place a firm timetable on the injury Friday while the team was still seeking multiple medical opinions. Moore said, per ESPN, "I think my understanding of this one, any player that was put in his situation where your foot slips and you get shoved from behind, this has nothing to do with Jordyn's history. Any player in that situation probably has the same diagnosis coming out of this." Moore also noted the injury is different from hamstring issues Tyson dealt with at Arizona State.

Before the injury, Tyson had practiced fully every day of training camp except for one-on-one drills against defensive backs. Moore praised his performance: "Jordyn's had a great camp. He's played really good football. Inevitably, this is the unfortunate part of what preseason and training camp football is."

The Saints were cautious with the No. 8 draft pick through rookie minicamp, OTAs, and veteran minicamp. Moore said Friday he was unsure whether Tyson would travel to California on Monday for joint practices with the Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Rams, noting that players who would not participate in the work could remain at the facility to continue training.

Coach Moore's statement that he was still gathering medical opinions suggests the two-month estimate is preliminary and subject to change as the team completes its evaluation process.
