Patriots Extend Christian Gonzalez to $135 Million Deal, Making Him NFL's Highest-Paid Cornerback

The New England Patriots signed cornerback Christian Gonzalez to a four-year, $135 million extension with $102 million guaranteed on September 8, according to ESPN. The deal carries an average annual value of $33.75 million, per Sporting News, making Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history by that measure.

The extension surpasses the previous cornerback record set by Devon Witherspoon, who signed a four-year, $132 million deal with the Seattle Seahawks in August with more than $101 million guaranteed and a $33 million average annual value. Witherspoon and Gonzalez are represented by the same agent, Reggie Johnson, according to Sporting News.

The deal was completed less than 48 hours before Wednesday's regular-season opener against the Seahawks, a Super Bowl LX rematch, per ESPN. Gonzalez was eligible for an extension for the first time this offseason after being drafted 17th overall by New England in 2023 from Oregon. Owner Robert Kraft said on July 25, per CBS Sports, "We love Christian Gonzalez. We love him as a player, as a person. That's why we made an offer to him that makes him the highest-paid player ever to play that position in the NFL, and coincidentally the highest contract in the Patriots franchise history."

Gonzalez earned second-team All-Pro honors in 2024 and was selected to his first Pro Bowl in 2025, per Sporting News. In 14 regular-season starts last season, he recorded 69 tackles and 10 passes defensed. Over four playoff games, he finished with 19 tackles, seven passes defensed, one interception, one sack and one forced fumble, including a game-clinching interception in the AFC Championship Game victory over Denver, per CBS Sports.

The cornerback has played in 34 regular-season games, starting all of them, and has started four postseason games, according to ESPN. He posted on his Instagram story after the deal: "THANK YOU LORD! PATS NATION LETS GO," per Sporting News.

However, Gonzalez has a documented injury history that prompted this deal during a rebuilding window. A dislocated right shoulder and torn labrum ended his rookie season after four games, per ESPN. In 2024, he started 16 regular-season games before missing the finale after a concussion in Week 17. Last season, he missed the first three games recovering from a hamstring injury in training camp. On August 10, he sustained a lower leg injury after practicing one-on-one with receiver A.J. Brown, per ESPN, but returned to practice on August 24 and made the trip to Seattle for Wednesday's game. Gonzalez expressed frustration on August 25 that the contract situation remained unresolved, according to ESPN.

Gonzalez was under contract for two more seasons at $2.259 million in 2026 and $18.11 million in 2027, per ESPN. The Patriots could have assigned him the franchise tag in 2028. On June 9, Gonzalez said he hoped to be "rewarded as a Patriot," per ESPN. At a minicamp in June, per CBS Sports, Gonzalez acknowledged that "there are different ways to measure" highest-paid, suggesting the Patriots' earlier offer might have been structured differently or measured differently than the final deal.

Gonzalez did not participate in New England's voluntary OTA sessions during the offseason but did attend the team's minicamp in June, per CBS Sports.
