LeBron James joins Philadelphia 76ers, passing on Cavaliers and Heat

LeBron James informed the Los Angeles Lakers on June 30 that he would not return, then spent nearly a month evaluating his options before announcing his decision to join the Philadelphia 76ers. In a statement posted on X, the 41-year-old wrote: "I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time."

James will join a 76ers roster that includes Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe. According to ESPN's reporting, James stated he believed "the 76ers are best positioned to win the 2027 NBA title with him joining the team." The acquisition of Jaylen Brown, per ESPN's sources, was crucial to Philadelphia's appeal. Before that deal, the 76ers would not have been reasonable to consider as a top-five destination for James.

Three teams constituted James' final choice, according to ESPN's Shams Charania: Cleveland, Miami, and Philadelphia. The Cavaliers could have fielded a roster of James, Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen. The Heat had traded for Giannis Antetokounmpo and have James' 2024 Olympic teammate Bam Adebayo on the roster, having sent Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kasparas Jakucionis to acquire him while losing All-Star Norman Powell in free agency.

Rich Paul, CEO of Klutch Sports and James' agent, told ESPN in early July that "basketball happiness" was driving James' choice. When asked directly what he was playing for, James answered in his statement: "What am I really playing for at this point? I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning." He specified he was not moving for money or family reasons.

Typese Maxey, a Klutch Sports client like James, was described by ESPN's reporting as an unquestionable key factor in landing the star. The Cavaliers' decision to trade Darius Garland, another Klutch-repped point guard with whom James has a yearslong relationship, to acquire James Harden from the LA Clippers in February, may have worked against Cleveland's positioning. Paul told ESPN's Ramona Shelburne on Friday that for a time he believed James was headed to Miami.

James finalized his choice late Thursday after spending days in Los Angeles with family and Paul. His statement thanked the Lakers, Miami, and Northeast Ohio: "Thank you LA. Miami I'll forever love and Northeast Ohio will always [be] home." The decision marks another chapter in James' career moves, after he wrote in a 2014 Sports Illustrated letter that he believed he would "return to Cleveland and finish my career there" and stated "I don't have the energy to do it again." He has since played 12 more seasons and switched teams twice.

Conversations James and Paul conducted with teams and players were mostly one-way, per ESPN sources, with James and Paul seeking information and assessing organizational fit rather than making demands. Commissioner Adam Silver's public comments at Fanatics Fest in New York City about pressuring James to decide did not affect his process, according to sources close to the deliberation.
