LeBron James Joins 76ers, Ending Late-Night Free Agency Deliberation

LeBron James decided at 1 a.m. Friday to join the Philadelphia 76ers, according to ESPN reporting, concluding a delayed free agency process that kept him weighing four teams through Thursday night.

James' agent Rich Paul described the decision-making as an "emotional roller coaster every single day" on his Game Over podcast with Max Kellerman. James was considering Philadelphia, Cleveland, Miami, and Golden State, with Minnesota also in view earlier before the final four were set.

The turning point, per Paul, came when the Sixers acquired Jaylen Brown in a trade with the Boston Celtics on July 1. That move placed Brown alongside Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, reshaping the roster composition James would inherit. Paul cited the existing relationship between James and Maxey as a crucial factor: Maxey, also represented by Klutch Sports Group, has worked out with James for the last five years, Paul said, with no anticipated friction in the transition.

Golden State offered Stephen Curry and Draymond Green as potential teammates, creating what Paul described as emotional tension against returning to Cleveland, where James won a 2016 championship, or Miami, where he played under Pat Riley. James announced his decision on X (formerly Twitter), saying he made the choice with a fifth championship in mind.

Paul also framed James' role on the Sixers roster, saying he would function as what he called "the best secondary playmaker in the league," positioned to support Maxey in pick-and-roll situations. The 76ers now field a trio of star-caliber players heading into the 2026-27 season, pending the league's approval of the move.

Minnesota had been a consideration during the process because Tim Connolly holds the position of president of basketball operations for the Wolves, but the team fell out of contention before the final four were identified.
