Engelbert sidesteps question on 2027 return as insiders predict end of tenure

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert avoided a direct answer when asked Saturday whether she expects to be commissioner at the start of the 2027 season, according to ESPN reporting from her All-Star Weekend news conference in Chicago. When asked the question directly, Engelbert replied: "I'm so blessed to be at the helm of this league during this incredible hypergrowth period. I will just continue to do my job, execute the strategy, because it has been working."

The deflection comes as ESPN has documented sustained internal pressure on Engelbert's leadership. The outlet reported recent conversations with more than 20 owners, management executives, players and industry insiders who shared a general sentiment that while Engelbert has overseen significant business growth, "she is not the right person to navigate the demands the league currently faces." Multiple high-ranking team sources told ESPN they believe the 2026 season will likely be Engelbert's last, according to the reporting, though this prediction remains unconfirmed.

Engelbert has consistently deflected questions about her future, per ESPN. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said earlier this month that while he is pleased with the league's trajectory under Engelbert, "we'll have ongoing discussions about what the future looks like." The phrasing suggests her position is under active review at the ownership level.

The commissioner addressed several initiatives Saturday. The league will launch a centralized replay center beginning with the 2027 season, which Engelbert called "one of the most significant investments we've ever made in our basketball operations." According to her announcement, the replay center will leverage the NBA's existing infrastructure in Secaucus, New Jersey, and will provide on-court officials with immediate access to multiple camera angles and support from replay officials to make more accurate and efficient decisions.

An independent investigation into the Las Vegas Aces for alleged salary cap circumvention, launched in May 2024 and handled by outside counsel, found "insufficient evidence" and no discipline will be imposed, Engelbert announced.

Engelbert met with players earlier in the week to discuss their ongoing concerns over increased harassment and officiating. Players called the conversation "hopeful" in establishing better trust and communication, according to ESPN. Engelbert acknowledged the work remains incomplete, saying: "We know there's more work to do, and we're going to work together to do it." On the broader challenge of leadership credibility, she stated: "We need to be better at communication. There's no doubt. I need to be better. Everybody needs to be better at communication, I think, all the time."
