Eagles OLB Greenard out another couple of weeks with pec injury

Philadelphia's $100 million pass-rush acquisition will remain sidelined for at least another couple of weeks, according to defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, after sustaining a pectoral strain while lifting before camp.

Jonathan Greenard, 29, was placed on the physically unable to perform list in late July following the pec strain. The Eagles relayed at the time that it was not a long-term injury, but Fangio expressed uncertainty about the player's availability before the regular season begins, saying that remained to be seen.

Greenard was acquired from the Minnesota Vikings during draft weekend in April. The Eagles sent two third-round draft picks, the No. 98 pick in this year's draft and a third-rounder next year, to the Vikings in exchange for the outside linebacker. He agreed to a four-year, $100 million extension that includes $50 million in guaranteed money.

The Eagles expected Greenard to assume a starting role alongside Jalyx Hunt, Nolan Smith Jr., AJ Epenesa and Arnold Ebiketie. Hunt in particular has enjoyed a strong summer. Greenard had three sacks in 12 games last season following double-digit sack campaigns in each of the previous two years with Minnesota. He recorded 12.5 sacks and was named to the Pro Bowl in his first season with the Vikings in 2024 but was slowed by a shoulder injury that ultimately required season-ending surgery in 2025.

Greenard spent the first four years of his career with the Houston Texans before signing with Minnesota to a four-year, $72 million deal in 2024. The uncertainty over his return timeline introduces risk into the Eagles' defensive preparation during the preseason window, though the team's statement that this is not a long-term injury suggests he may be available before Week 1.
