College Sports Commission clears $227M in NIL deals in July and August

The College Sports Commission cleared more than $227 million in NIL deals during the two-month period ending August 31, according to ESPN's reporting. The figure nearly doubled the value of all deals cleared over the CSC's first year of operation.

The CSC was established as part of a lawsuit settlement that allows schools to pay players directly through a revenue-sharing system and permits third parties to augment compensation through sponsorship deals. One of the CSC's key functions is evaluating NIL contracts between players and associated entities, people or companies with relationships to the schools, to ensure deals serve a legitimate purpose and reflect fair market value.

Of the $227 million in deals, $188.6 million involved associated entities, per ESPN. NIL Go, the CSC's processing platform, cleared 7,639 deals over the two-month span. The CSC processed an average of more than 200 deals per day between July 1 and August 31, up from 94 per day over its first year of operation.

The CSC expanded its staff to support the acceleration: the organization now has 29 full-time employees, with 12 devoted full-time to the NIL Go platform, according to ESPN. Much of the increase in deal volume can be attributed to a streamlined process with the platform and expanded personnel to evaluate contracts.

Resolution speed also improved. According to ESPN, 68 percent of deals processed between July 1 and August 31 were resolved within seven days, indicating the system's maturation in handling the volume.
