Celta Vigo's La Liga opener postponed due to fungal outbreak on pitch

Celta Vigo's season-opening La Liga match against Osasuna, scheduled for August 17, was postponed after a fungal outbreak made the pitch at Estadio de Balaidos unfit for play. League officials inspected the field on Wednesday and determined the condition of the pitch, caused by fungus and adversely affected by recent weather, made it impossible to proceed. La Liga said both clubs and the Spanish soccer federation agreed to the postponement because of an illness that had affected the stadium's pitch, according to ESPN's reporting.

Celta attributed the outbreak to recent weather conditions that set back remediation efforts. Per ESPN, Celta said La Liga had already inspected the field the previous week and validated the work being carried out to eradicate the disease. The club stated that the poor condition of the pitch, caused by the fungus, made it impossible to play on the original date despite efforts by the home club to address the problem.

La Liga rescheduled the match for August 27, but Osasuna immediately disputed the decision. According to ESPN's reporting, Osasuna released a statement saying it did not agree with the new date and that the decision went against their interests and voided a previous agreement between both clubs. Osasuna said both clubs had agreed to play on either September 24 or September 25, during the international break, a timing that would not overload either team's schedule and would allow for player recovery early in the season, per ESPN.

Osasuna criticized La Liga and the Spanish federation for making the postponement decision just three days before kickoff. The club said the late decision fits a pattern of last-minute calendar changes that have become all too common due to a lack of foresight and seriousness. Per ESPN, Osasuna stated that neither La Liga nor the RFEF accepted the clubs' request and unilaterally decided the match would be played on August 27. Osasuna said the unilateral decision for a new date was simply unacceptable and disrespectful, and that the team most affected by the initial postponement for reasons beyond its control is again the most affected by the new schedule, according to ESPN's reporting.
