Antonelli wins Italian Grand Prix from 19th grid spot, September 6

Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza on September 6, climbing from 19th on the grid to take the checkered flag ahead of team-mate George Russell, per BBC Sport. The 20-year-old started deep in the field after receiving a penalty for exceeding his permitted number of engine parts.

Antonelli's victory extends his championship lead to 66 points and marks the second-deepest grid position from which any driver has ever won a Grand Prix. John Watson holds the record, winning from 22nd at the 1983 United States Grand Prix West, according to BBC Sport.

The race turned on strategy during a virtual safety car triggered by Lance Stroll's Aston Martin breakdown at the first chicane. Antonelli's side of the garage elected to pit for fresh tires while Russell stayed out, a decision that left Antonelli 15 seconds behind in sixth place after he rejoined. Over the following laps, Antonelli moved past Pierre Gasly, Lando Norris, Lewis Hamilton and Oscar Piastri as Russell's tires deteriorated. With five laps remaining, the two Mercedes drivers were nose to tail. On lap 50, Antonelli's first attempt to pass at the first chicane ended when he slid into the gravel on debris off line, opening a 1.7-second gap. He closed that gap and passed Russell between the Lesmo corners and Ascari, per BBC Sport.

Russell finished second. Max Verstappen took third after briefly leading following the race's red flag restart on lap 3, when Charles Leclerc's Ferrari lost control at the Parabolica while defending from Oscar Piastri and struck the barriers. Leclerc was unharmed. Norris finished fourth and Piastri fifth, both McLaren, with Hamilton sixth in his Ferrari.

Antonelli told BBC Sport: "I did not expect. Unbelievable. I am so happy, I could never imagine being here today." Russell said he struggled with tire management in the closing laps but noted that when he checked the leaderboard after the restart, Antonelli was already climbing through the field. Antonelli becomes the first Italian to win at Monza since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966.
