Aaron Donald Re-Signs With Rams, $20M Deal, August 30

Aaron Donald ended his retirement and rejoined the Los Angeles Rams on a one-year deal worth $20 million, according to Front Office Sports. The 35-year-old defensive tackle, who sat out the 2025 season after a 10-year tenure with the franchise, accepted a revised contract that represents a steep reduction from the approximately $30 million he had remaining on his prior agreement.

Donald is a 10-time Pro Bowl selection with eight first-team All-Pro honors and three NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards. He won a Super Bowl title with Los Angeles in 2022. In a video posted to social media titled "The Return," Donald confirmed his comeback, and in a letter to Commissioner Roger Goodell, stated "I'm Back." His wife Erica posted on X, "I let him out the house y'all."

The Rams renegotiated the financial structure: Donald receives $10 million in base salary and an additional $10 million through per-game 53-man roster bonuses, per Front Office Sports. His agent, Todd France of Athletes First, oversaw the deal. Donald also signed with Jon Rosen's management company, Envisionary, to develop his media, brand, and entertainment profile.

The Rams acquired pass rusher Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns in June, dealing Jared Verse and three draft picks (first-rounder 2027, second-rounder 2028, third-rounder 2029). Garrett is a two-time Defensive Player of the Year who set the NFL's single-season sack record with 23 in 2025. The roster also features quarterback Matthew Stafford, the reigning league MVP, and wide receiver Puka Nacua. In March, Los Angeles traded for cornerback Trent McDuffie and signed him to a four-year, $124 million extension with $100 million guaranteed, per Front Office Sports. The Rams are the first NFL team to field both the prior season's Defensive Player of the Year and the reigning MVP at quarterback.

Coach Sean McVay adopted a cautious approach at a news conference, stating "It's going to be a day at a time for us" and declining to commit to Donald's availability for the season opener September 10 against the 49ers in Melbourne. "I'm not going to talk about any sort of plans," McVay said. "We'll see what that ramp-up period looks like, whether or not he's available or whether or not we think it's best to be able to play him in Australia." Donald participated in two official workouts with the Rams before signing. The Rams had $15.4 million in cap space, per NFLPA records, sufficient to accommodate the base salary component.

Donald told reporters he feels capable of elite play: "Do I feel like I can play at a high level? Yes. Do I feel like I can still be myself? A hundred percent. If I didn't feel like that, I wouldn't be here." He said the roster moves impressed him, noting "Seeing what was being done with this team, the pieces that were getting brought here," made him reconsider retirement. "You have conversations and then kind of start bringing it to fruition, starting to put myself in a position to train and get my body to a certain point where I felt good and seeing how I move," he said.

McVay's language underscores uncertainty about Donald's conditioning timeline. The franchise lost the NFC Championship last season to Seattle and aims to return to contention.
