111 games, zero errors: Wilson sets MLB record at shortstop

Jacob Wilson of the Athletics set an MLB record for consecutive error-free games at shortstop with 111 straight games without a fielding mistake, according to ESPN. The 24-year-old shortstop surpassed Baltimore Orioles' Mike Bordick's previous record of 110 games, established in 2002.

Wilson last made an error on July 6, 2025, in a game against San Francisco. The milestone came during the Athletics' 4-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday at Fenway Park, ending a 12-game losing streak.

Wilson's record-breaking performance reflects a regimen of daily preparation. According to ESPN, he takes ground balls every day he plays shortstop, approximately two hours before the start of the game. In a statement carried by ESPN, Wilson said: "I do that every day that I'm playing short. The DH days I try to stay off my feet as much as I can, but every day I'm playing short I'm taking ground balls no matter what. You need to get as much work on the field, ground ballswise as you can."

Wilson's father, Jack Wilson, was a 12-year major leaguer who also played shortstop. According to ESPN, the younger Wilson credited his father's emphasis on defensive fundamentals, saying: "He's a very defensive-first guy for me growing up by teaching me defense first before the hitting side of things and making sure you're always prepared to play defense every day."

During Sunday's game, Wilson fielded five plays: two popups (one involving a collision with second baseman Jeff McNeil on an infield fly), two grounders, and the middleman on a 4-6-3 double play. One grounder was hit deep into the hole by Ceddanne Rafaela, and Wilson made a long throw to first, per ESPN.

Starting pitcher J.T. Ginn commented on Wilson's work ethic: "It's pretty amazing the way he prepares and works. That stuff doesn't come by chance. He's a great worker. He's put a lot of time into his defense," according to ESPN.
